Frequently asked questions

Why is the material non-toxic?+
Because it is documented by independent laboratory testing. The composite material has been tested to the EN 71-3 toy standard (migration of certain elements), and every test with a regulatory limit passed: the measured values use only 0.5–1.2% of the permitted limits — 86–203 times below the requirements. The heavy metals lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic, antimony and chromium(VI) were not detected, and a targeted PFAS analysis (REACH) found no fluorinated substances. Cured glass-fibre composite is also a stable, inert material in itself: it releases nothing in normal use, does not rot and needs no impregnation.
How is WindPlay produced?+
A wind turbine blade produces green power for 20–25 years. When the turbine is decommissioned, permits for reuse are obtained and the blades — up to 30 metres long — are cut into smaller sections. The sections are machined, shaped and assembled with warm wooden slats and sturdy fittings — and finally powder-coated in one of our curated RAL colours. The result is sculptural play equipment and street furniture where the organic shape of the blade can still be felt.
What makes WindPlay safe for children?+
Three things: shape, material and documentation. The equipment has soft, rounded forms and smooth powder-coated surfaces with no sharp edges. The material is the same that carries a wind turbine blade through 25 years of storms — and it is chemically tested to EN 71-3, the standard that applies to toys. The finished installation is designed and assessed to the European playground standard EN 1176. The collection is also designed for inclusivity: easily accessible elements for the youngest, more challenging climbing for older children — with mirror panels, tunnels and relaxation elements in between.
Is the product environmentally friendly?+
Yes — that is the whole idea. Decommissioned wind turbine blades are hard to recycle because of their size and typically end up as waste today. WindPlay gives the material a new life instead of landfill: circular economy in practice. And the playgrounds have an educational dimension — they show children and adults where green power comes from, and what the blades can become afterwards. Play powered by wind.
How durable is it?+
The blades are engineered to withstand extreme wind, weather and fatigue loads through 20–25 years of operation in open country and at sea. As play and street furniture the material is therefore exceptionally resistant to weather, UV light, moisture and wear — it does not rust and does not rot. The same technology is used for foot and cycle bridges, including the bridge in Szprotawa, Poland, built on a blade structure.
How should the products be cleaned and maintained?+
Wipe the surfaces down or hose them off with water and, if needed, a mild soap; avoid aggressive solvents. Wooden elements can be treated as required, and we recommend an annual inspection of fittings and fixings. With minimal maintenance, WindPlay lasts for many years.
What documentation is included?+
We supply a complete material dossier: an independent laboratory report on chemical safety (EN 71-3 migration, PFAS/REACH analysis and heavy metals — most recently report TR2822892, July 2026), product sheets with dimensions and RAL colours, and assembly instructions. The finished installation is assessed to EN 1176 as part of the project. Contact us and we will send the documentation for your specific project.
Can the material be used for more than playgrounds?+
Yes. The collection also includes street furniture — benches such as SAIL, WING and VORTEX, plus planters — and the technology is likewise used for bridges, piers and slope reinforcement. That makes it possible to give an entire urban space a coherent, green identity with one continuous material.
